Handfasting Ribbon Green Herringbone
£55.00
100% Pure Wool
From Isle of Skye sheep
Handfasting, hand tying or hand binding is a traditional Celtic ritual that symbolises a couple’s commitment to each other. Today this age-old custom has become a popular addition to wedding and civil partnership ceremonies in Scotland.
Imbued with tradition and very limited edition, our handfasting ribbon is a really special way to ‘tie the knot’.
The ribbon is part of a small length of our Skye Wool tweed that was ‘waulked’ (finished) by hand for us by Sgioba Luaidh Inbhirchluaidh, the Inverclyde Waulking Group. Waulking is a traditional part of the tweed-making process in the Highlands where women would finish the cloth by rhythmically beating it, accompanied by Gaelic song. Find out more about this process and see the group waulking this tweed in our blog.
Prior to waulking, we wove the tweed on our pedal powered looms using wool from Isle of Skye sheep. It is woven in a herringbone pattern using grey and green yarns.
We donate 10% of each handfasting ribbon sale to Sgioba Luaidh Inbhirchluaidh, helping to keep Highland traditions alive.
The handfasting ribbon comes in a special presentation box. The Skye Weavers label is lightly sewn onto the ribbon so that it can be easily removed if preferred. If you are planning a wedding or elopement you may also be interested in our Ebb Tide Shawl Soft Cloud.
