When we first moved here a year and a half ago, we didn’t quite realise yet how many artists and makers live on Skye. We are still a long way off having met everyone and meanwhile new businesses and enterprises are springing up everywhere. It’s a great environment to be weaving in and we feel inspired by all the work around us!
Recently Tony and Eva of the Shilasdair Skye Yarn Company in Waternish dyed some absolutely beautiful red yarn for us. Tony and Eva have been working with natural dye plants for many years and have now developed a system of cabinet-dyeing, which enables them to dye larger quantities in one go. This is great news for us, because we love the yarn they’ve dyed for us, and are really keen on developing the relationship! If you are a knitter, weaver or lover of colour, I would highly recommend a visit to Judi’s Shilasdair Yarn Shop in Waternish, next door to Tony and Eva. Judi stocks all the Shilasdair colours as well as knitted garments, knitting patterns and much more.
Here are some examples of what we did with Shilasdair’s red yarn.
Madder Shawls available in our shop in Glendale.
The throws with the red over-check sold out within a couple of weeks and we are going to weave another roll soon. One of our customers went on to visit Jennifer at the Skye Quilt Studio and commissioned two cushion covers matching the red colour in the newly purchased throw. Jennifer came up with the lovely design below and I’m in the queue to get a wall hanging like that myself now. Jennifer’s studio in Glendale is another place you definitely shouldn’t miss out on when you are in the area.
And there are so many other special places! If you are at all interested in textiles, crafts and art, Skye is a great location to visit. There is a very good booklet published annually by the Skye & Lochalsh Arts & Crafts Association (SLACA), which lists a lot of the artists and craftmakers in the area. You can download the current copy of the booklet from the SLACA website.
I hope you’ll enjoy your visit and am looking forward to meeting some of you at the Skye Weavers weaving shed!
